--- Log opened Sat Oct 13 00:00:13 2007
00:00 <****> I just need transactions for my shell. Begin; do a bunch of stuff that's likely to break the world; ROLLBACK;
00:00 <****> problem is, when I type rollback, it never works ;)
00:00 <****> heh ;)
00:00 <****> wide_awake: virtual machine with snapshot capability
00:01 * wide_awake likes virtual machines
00:01 <****> how to enable support for flash & mp3 in debian?
00:01 <****> does anybody know a better alternative for scanmem?
00:02 <****>etch upgrade, although you might just have a couple of packages that have newer versions that etch at present.... that depends how stale your etch/sid mix was.
00:02 <****> !tell guarish about debian-multimedia
00:02 <****> better in terms of more and better features
00:02 <****> themill: thanks
00:03 <****> DustyDingo: like running it inside gdb in the first place?
00:03 <****> lol why is debian so unstable
00:03 <****> still seems like a bad idea to do it on a friday afternoon though ;)
00:03 <****> I play a dvd in _stable_ debian, and bam - crash of kaffeine, wtf
00:03 <****> i don't know if it is a general problem, but scanmem is very slow when it comes to monitoring memory
00:03 <****> oh, one other thing - the box is AMD64, and was originally set up when amd64 wasn't officially supported
00:03 <****> rmaj|wrk: that's more likely to be kaffeine's fault... or out-of-debian packages.
00:04 <****> does that make any difference on how scared I should be?
00:04 <****> so which debian I use to have crash free programs?
00:04 <****> wide_awake: eek.... that might make things a lot more ..umm.... fun.
00:04 <****> stable crashes, testing crashes...
00:04 <****> Yo!
00:04 * wide_awake wouldn't use the word "fun".
00:04 <****> rmaj you here too
00:04 <****> ?
00:04 <****> selections.dpkg
00:04 <****> jelly-home: well i won't use such a tool, if i had the benefit of debug code;)
00:04 <****> rmaj|wrk: maybe it's your choice of app, not the choice of distro?
00:04 <****> jelly-home: kaffeine is not a good appl?
00:05 <****> what to use then?
00:05 <****> rmaj|wrk: don't like kaffeine then don't use it. mplayer is good.
00:05 <****> wide_awake: would a reinstall be easier, I wonder... /msg dpkg reinstall
00:05 <****> totem even dont have a stupid eq2 filter (gamma correction)
00:05 <****> wide_awake: the second half of it.
00:05 <****> DustyDingo: ask the vendor to provide debug info
00:05 <****> rmaj|wrk: or xine.
00:05 <****> ewww xine
00:05 <****> yuk
00:05 <****> themill: nope. I don't have physical access to the box. and downtime is a big no-no (which is why I let it get so extremely stale)
00:06 <****> rmaj|wrk: ask the dvd consortium to release specs and a free licence... that would be a big help to stable dvd viewing.
00:06 <****> #join #ubuntu
00:06 <****> oops
00:06 <****> it would definitely be /better/, just not easier.
00:06 <****> DustyDingo: most commercial apps I've seen ship with unstripped and binaries anyway, makes it easier for them to resolve the crashed I guess
00:06 <****> wide_awake: ahh... yes...
00:06 <****> themill: shure. just let me open my email client
00:06 <****> *sure
00:06 <****> jelly-home: *grml* why you don't understand? i acctually need a tool to monitor and tweak the memory of a running process
00:07 <****> it has nothing to do with debugging
00:07 <****> anyone know what's up with this:
00:07 <****> mark@zim:~$ gcc test.c
00:07 <****> /lib/libc.so.6: file not recognized: File format not recognized
00:08 <****> DustyDingo: umm.... isn't scanmem a debugging utility?
00:08 <****> DustyDingo: well, what are you using it for then, if not debug?
00:08 <****> wide_awake: what version of libc6-dev is installed?
00:09 <****> stew, 2.5-7
00:09 <****> wide_awake: ahhh. that's going to make your upgrade much harder.
00:09 <****> I suspected as much.
00:09 * wide_awake cries
00:09 <****> why the hell should someone use scanmem for general tasks debugging,...
00:10 <****> jelly-home: uh, just want to play around a bit
00:10 <****> wide_awake: and you wnat to move to etch?
00:10 <****> DustyDingo: from the package description "Scanmem is a simple interactive debugging utility for linux,..."
00:10 <****> stew: ideally I want to be running stable.
00:10 <****> DustyDingo: oh well, doesn't sound important then :-)
00:11 <****> I had to start off with testing/unstable long ago because stuff I needed wasn't in stable. But now the stable kernel has what I need, and I can compile anything else newer than stable that I want.
00:11 <****> wide_awake: its going to take some time. run aptitude, find libc6, hit enter, select the stable version 2.3.6.ds1-13etch2 by hitting + ; fobid any newer versions, then you will have a ton of broken packages
00:12 <****> wide_awake: search for broken packages with by hitting / and searching for "~b"
00:12 <****> wide_awake: then for each of those broken packages, hit enter, and select the stable version with +
00:12 <****> wide_awake: and repeat until you have no more broken packages, then hit 'g'
00:12 <****> i tried to enable the multimedia repo but it gives a pubkey error :(
00:12 <****> stew, is that after having changed my sources.list to stable?
00:12 <****> = features could be usefull in some cases for debugging, but i never had such a situation before
00:12 <****> stew: does dpkg's "partial downgrade" factoid summarise that accurately?
00:13 <****> wide_awake: yes and run aptitude update
00:13 <****> ok
00:13 <****> howver i did import the pubkey
00:13 <****> !partial downgrade
00:13 <****> This may or may not work for you, but if you've got nothing to lose then try it. (a) Change sources.list (b) aptitude update (c) aptitude and then search for the upgraded packages, hit enter on them, select the correct version (d) do the same for libc6 (e) search for broken packages by hitting "/" and searching for "~b" and then fix them in the same way (f) once you ahve no more broken pacakges, hit 'g'
00:17 <****> hey what happened??
00:17 <****> why everyone was kicked out?
00:17 <****> can debian play any dvds?
00:17 <****> crash
00:17 <****> gaurish: google for netsplit
00:17 <****> rmaj|wrk: yes. it can.
00:18 <****> wtf
00:18 <****> either I can not set gamma or size of the video (depending on -vo)
00:18 <****> other options?
00:19 <****> welcome back everyone....
00:19 <****> merci
00:20 <****> How can I stop the; Oct 12 22:54:01 sglhrcvs -- MARK -- to stop filling up syslog?
00:20 <****> !syslog mark
00:20 <****> To disable the --MARK-- messages, edit /etc/init.d/sysklogd and change the SYSLOGD="" line to read SYSLOGD="-m 0" then run /etc/init.d/sysklogd restart
00:20 <****> What's wrong here: 00 04 * * "/bin/ksh -c /home/claudio/backup/smop/dobkp"
00:20 <****> ?
00:20 <****> There is no SYSLOGD variable in that file
00:20 <****> ..and it doesn't work if I add it myself
00:20 <****> Hey, what would be the problem if my box can receive incoming connections but can't establish outgoing?
