00:00 <****> wildcard0: controlC0 pcmC0D0c pcmC0D0p pcmC0D1c pcmC0D1p seq timer
00:00 <****> Another silly question from me - I've just read the avoiding Xorg 7.3 faq, and further I've decided I don't know enough to run ~arch, even on my testing machine. Is it safe to simply alter my accept_keywords, or will that cause dependency hell?
00:00 <****> anyone have odd setup problems with a pci sata card? (SIIG sata II-150 pci). lspci reads it as Initio Corporation Unkown device 1622 rev 02). i can't see a /dev/sdc or /dev/sdd for either drive connected
00:00 <****> NeddySeagoon, so from the liveCD, how do I ddrescue?
00:00 <****> ok I put in vesa and ati
00:00 <****> I can't just copy the binary from another machine, can I
00:00 <****> ok. see if this is correct. to emerge xorg-server and all of kde I need emerge -va xorg-server kdebase-meta?
00:00 <****> and i believe the kernel is ok (running sata on the other 2 drives ... onboard)
00:00 <****> I want pretty much everything
00:01 <****> RFC_1149_Laptop you need to add about 4 packages to your /etc/portage/package.mask to keep the old xorg
00:01 <****> RFC_1149_Laptop from the Gentoo liveCD, you don't. I think knoppix has it
00:01 <****> NeddySeagoon, okay - I'll do that when my machine is working. But I'm beginning to question running ~arch. is there any way I can put the system on hold until it can upgrade to only stable packages - I don't want to have to emerge the world
00:02 <****> emily, i see a lot of other people seeing the problem though i don't see a solution yet :)
00:02 <****> NeddySeagoon, okay - I'll take a look at knoppix
00:02 <****> RFC_1149_Laptop Not easily
00:02 <****> wildcard0: thanks for your help! sadly, I have to go :-( I'll be back later I hope! at least i'm not alone...
00:03 <****> NeddySeagoon, so I'm left masking xorg in keywords
00:03 <****> Okay
00:03 <****> I've run ~arch for about 6 months now, and not had any major problems
00:03 <****> I just keep thinking I probably don't know enough - my other machines are just x86 thankfully - wouldn't risk ~'ing them,
00:04 <****> RFC_1149_Laptop I've run ~arch for about 5 years with only one major issue. expat and modular xorg at the same time
00:04 <****> RFC_1149_Laptop: run ~ in chroot
00:04 <****> Thanks for all the help. I think this is one of the great advantages of the distro - perhaps one of the most helpful communities (although I've not tried ubuntu - it is apparently very noob friendly)
00:04 <****> how do i install gentoo
00:04 <****> Is there some way to emerge mysql without using oracle?
00:04 <****> RFC_1149_Laptop the road to ~x86 is meant to be one way. going back would just mean don't update for a long while then pray
00:05 <****> ubuntu is noob friendly because that's what the have, noobs =P
00:05 <****> kale, interesting. I prefer just to have one machine ~x86 for testing, and the other stable
00:05 <****> anyone help with pci sata?
00:05 <****> tdr, okay - not for me then - sounds like more hassle than just running ~arch
00:05 <****> cpeek: start by getting the CD!
00:05 <****> which image
00:05 <****> cpeek you need to follow the handbook http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml
00:05 <****> sorry im a n00b
00:05 <****> cpeek, does the live cd boot on your computer ?
00:06 <****> im not sure yet
00:06 <****> cpeek: depends on your skills, i'd take the minimal installer, but there is a livecd too
00:06 <****> at this juncture (and I hope I am not speaking too soon), I am grateful to have a separate headless server, multiple boxes, and networked backups!
00:06 <****> which is the best to try first
00:06 <****> Tell me I didn't just do that
00:06 <****> hi, someone with a thinkpad who could make sound work?
00:07 <****> cpeek, that'd be a good thing for starters. if the livecd boots and recognises most of your hardware you're good to go. If it's a no-boot or it catch devices you can't live without (sound?) then you will need some prior linux experience
00:07 <****> laynor: yes, but different thinkpads have different hardware ...
00:07 <****> Did you guys just see my /etc?
00:07 * keg hunts for access to the 2 sata drives using pci sata card. help?
00:07 <****> laynor: what does lspci claim your soundcard is?
00:07 <****> bonsaikitten: mine has an intel hda
00:07 <****> hello
00:07 <****> bonsaikitten: wait, ill paste the lspci output
00:07 <****> laynor: I have an ac97
00:08 <****> keg: what does lspci claim the controller is?
00:08 <****> NeddySeagoon, thanks again. I'll drop in tomorrow and report progress
00:08 <****> ATA controller: Initio Corporation Unknown device 1622 (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [Vendor specific])
00:08 <****> bonsaikitten: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
00:08 <****> keg: mmmh fun, that might work with "generic IDE" or what it's called
00:08 <****> i tried running emerge -uv compiz-extra and got a call stack error (compile failure) can anyone advise on which area i need to fix
00:09 <****> laynor: the intel-hda module doesn't work?
00:09 <****> mzbot: teach Pretoriab about pastebin
00:09 <****> Pretoriab: A pastebin is a web site where you can paste many text lines or sometimes files instead of flooding a channel. Consider using rafb.net/paste instead. If you don't have a browser you can "emerge nopaste" or "emerge wgetpaste" to send text to http://rafb.net/paste from the command line.
00:09 <****> bonsaikitten:
00:09 <****> :-)
00:09 <****> lemme look in the kernel
00:09 <****> RFC_1149_Laptop see you soon
00:09 <****> my last look i tried just compiling in more sata options
00:09 <****> no dice
00:09 <****> bonsaikitten: alsamixer works, but there's no master volume control, and I can't hear any sound
00:10 <****> http://pastebin.ca/743918
00:10 <****> laynor, laptop ?
00:10 <****> Hello people. What are the min requirements of gentoo to install ?
00:10 <****> bigmoo: yes, thinkpad t61
00:10 <****> Thanks again all
00:10 <****> I need to go
00:10 <****> bonsaikitten: I have "generic default IDE chipset support" compiled in already
00:10 <****> On the ancient laptop, and the battery is going
00:11 <****> laynor http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=2
00:11 <****> Beket_: 3GHz Opteron, 8GB RAM.
00:11 * astinus chuckles
00:11 <****> oops Beket_^^^
00:11 <****> astinus, lol :D
00:11 <****> sorry laynor
00:11 <****> laynor, i haven't tried on thinkpad, but on toshiba i had to use HG alsa-driver (that's alsa-driver-9999) and patch it with something i found on the alsa forums. I heard that patch was incorporated into the sources now, but haven't tried yet. So maybe just alsa-drivers-9999 will solve it for you
00:11 <****> thanks Mahasamatman
00:11 <****> np
00:12 <****> i tried running emerge -uv compiz-extra and got a call stack error (compile failure) can anyone advise on which area i need to fix here is the error http://pastebin.ca/743918
00:12 <****> i also do not see a /dev/sdc or /dev/sdd for the drives
00:12 <****> astinus: hmm, I think I can do that :-)
00:12 <****> Pretoriab: post more info
00:12 <****> http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml follow all the docs carefully Beket_ :D
00:12 <****> mzbot: teach Pretoriab about error
00:12 <****> Pretoriab: To inform us about a problem, you need to give us the /fault/, not the error. Error lines that begin with "!!!" or "make" are of no use to us. Fault lines, like "foobar.o: no such file or directory" or "undefined variable cabli" are. If it is over a few lines, please use a pastebin such as http://rafb.net/paste/ (details: gentoo-detailed/error)
00:12 <****> how much more
00:12 <****> and i currently have /dev/sda and sdb setup on lvm... so sata was working before
00:13 <****> ok
00:13 <****> Beket_ a 486DX with 64Mb RAM and about 5Gb HDD
00:13 <****> thanks for letting me know
00:13 <****> and is working now on those
00:13 <****> dude, that's a lot of mem for a 486 =)
00:14 <****> here you go http://pastebin.ca/743921
