00:00 <****> is there linux tools for avi(probably divx) to DVD/AC3
00:00 <****> dcoats: hmm... too general
00:01 <****> if I have smp enabled on a single core processor, do i want MAKEOPTS="-j3" or just stick with j2?
00:02 <****> shadebug: in most case it wouldnt hurt to try out -j3 , but in a few you may find the desire to put it back at -j2
00:02 <****> dcoats, when I run an audio player called quodlibet I get this error: "ImportError: No module named pygs" and it fails to load. Yesterday it worked fine. I had some problems with pygtk yesterday night (I noticed errors while launching GIMP that some python plugins failed to load) so I removed and emerged python again and now GIMP works and loads fine with no errors, but quodlibet fails. Any ideas?
00:02 <****> shadebug: its up to you
00:02 <****> I tried reemerging gstreamer
00:02 <****> dcoats: so it wouldn't cause any major issues?
00:02 <****> shadebug: try both
00:03 <****> shadebug: it depends if you have a lot of memory
00:03 <****> oomega: i have 1gb
00:03 <****> GB
00:03 <****> gb
00:03 <****> shadebug: I think -j mostly uses memory
00:03 <****> gB
00:03 <****> ahh
00:03 <****> DrSlony: emerge -av quodlibet
00:04 <****> shadebug: then you prolly ok. But try one time with -j3 and then -j2 then you can see the difference yourselfe
00:04 <****> fudge it, I'll just use j2 for the moment to get the main system installed and then switch to j3 to load less important programs
00:04 <****> oomega: that could work to, but I probably don't have the patience to do it all twice
00:05 <****> dcoats, did that, still same error
00:06 <****> dcoats you da bomb
00:06 <****> DrSlony: what exactly is the error
00:06 <****> Marticus: ok , what did I do this time?
00:06 <****> I'm guessing updating gcc and stdc is a good thing so long as portage is updated alongside it
00:07 <****> that and rsync got updated
00:07 <****> Marticus: sure , just follow the gentoo gcc upgrade guide
00:07 <****> anyway, I've re-synced
00:07 <****> what to do http://rafb.net/p/og7Lnv55.html
00:08 <****> ?
00:08 <****> I did follow the gcc upgrade guide, nothing said to update portage lol
00:08 <****> how do i get the nice boot loading screen on my installed system that was used by the liveCD?
00:08 <****> :D
00:08 <****> and that emerge would fail to sync with rsync errors :)
00:08 <****> yaccin: one moment
00:08 <****> yaccin: look for splash screen howto on gentoo-wiki.com
00:08 <****> I've done that on my minimalist laptop install
00:08 <****> Marticus: no need to hurry ims till emerging xorg :D
00:09 <****> badman1: looks like the rpm you downloaded to /usr/portage/distfiles isnt any good
00:09 <****> yeah, what adam said
00:09 <****> AdamB: thx ^^
00:09 <****> I used the splash screen howto
00:09 <****> badman1: remove it and try again
00:09 <****> dcoats, Traceback (most recent call last):
00:09 <****> File "/usr/bin/quodlibet", line 301, in ?
00:09 <****> import pygst
00:09 <****> ImportError: No module named pygst
00:09 <****> dcoats: thanks for your help ! all set now, with the familiar emacs interface. Gentoo seems a good bootloader for emacs :D
00:09 <****> dcoats: i did many times
00:09 <****> DrSlony: python-updater -i
00:10 <****> yaccin: the menu.lst entry: initrd (hd0,1)/boot/fbsplash-livecd-2006.0-1024x768
00:10 <****> DrSlony: emerge -1av gst-python
00:10 <****> DrSlony: wht bonsaikitten said would be good :)
00:10 <****> si se?or
00:11 <****> yaccin: and for the kernel line: video=vesafb:ywrap,1024x768-16@60 splash=silent,theme:livecd-2006.0
00:11 <****> localhost drslony # python-updater -i
00:11 <****> * Can't determine any previous Python version(s).
00:11 <****> DrSlony: but pygst comes from gst-python
00:11 <****> that's what I used
00:11 <****> has anyone tried emerging vlc recently? i can't get wxwindows interface working even with wxwindows flag enabled
00:11 <****> but there are other steps involved
00:11 <****> adam, I haven't yet, but I will momentarily
00:12 <****> yaccin: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_gensplash
00:12 <****> dcoats: if you noticed, the checksum is correct anyway
00:12 <****> ok after emerge gst-python I get an error that theres no module named mutagen, so Im sure if I re-emerge mutagen it will work. My question is this: since aftery yesterday's adventure with python problems I have had to reemebrge several programs already that started complaining, would it be a good idea to leave the pc for the night reemerging everything? Would reemerging all packages I have not be something that might do good?
00:13 <****> badman1: I saw that and thought that maybe you had ebuild digested it :)
00:13 <****> hey guys is gentoo the most reliable operating system
00:13 <****> i wasted 48 hours with opensuse filled with bugs
00:14 <****> monk: seems fast and solid to me, especially if you stick to stable
00:14 <****> monk: gentoo is a most customizable operating system, it can be made very reliable or very bleeding-edge. your choice
00:15 <****> Then Gentoo is for me
00:15 <****> DrSlony: emerge -e world wouldnt hurt, but still may not be necessary
00:15 <****> DrSlony: have you run revdep-rebuild ?
00:15 <****> i heard if i make my password called good morning
00:15 <****> nobody will notice right
00:15 <****> there I go again, reemerged mutagen, but I got error: ImportError: No module named dbus
00:15 <****> so I have to reemerge dbus
00:16 <****> dcoats, yes I have, so do you now think emerge -e world is a good idea?
00:16 <****> Marticus: plz pm me your impressions after you try it. i'm curious if i'm the only one having a problem.
00:16 <****> DrSlony: python-updater
00:16 <****> DrSlony: emerge -av dbus-python
00:16 <****> DrSlony: python-updater might help
00:16 <****> DrSlony: or you might try python-updater
00:16 <****> haven't run across this one before. My emerge world is being blocked by a package I just uninstalled.
00:16 <****> bonsaikitten: he has no prev. versions
00:17 <****> I plug in my new USB audio device, but it doesn't /appear/ that udev is creating any devices for. How does one "debug" udev stuff?
00:17 <****> dcoats: that is fascinating
00:17 <****> mauilion: pastebin the output
00:18 <****> dcorbin: dmesg doesnt show it being plugged in?
00:18 <****> I heard debian users making fun of gentoo users
00:18 <****> dcorbin: what kind of device? ipod?
00:18 <****> i feel bad : (
00:18 <****> dcoats it does.
00:18 <****> No. It's a turtlebeach sound card
00:19 <****> usb 3-1: USB disconnect, address 2
00:19 <****> usb 3-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
00:19 <****> usb 3-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
00:19 <****> input: USB Audio as /class/input/input6
