00:05 <****> is it *bad* to have a RAID array rebuild a spare drive while it is mounted?
00:08 <****> how can i get the boot sector from a bootable cd?
00:08 <****> just with dd?
00:08 <****> or is it more complex than that
00:09 <****> bs=512 count=1
00:09 <****> oh, yeah, you'll want an of too
00:10 <****> oh nevermind
00:10 <****> YESS!
00:10 <****> the boot image is on the cd already
00:10 <****> YES!
00:10 <****> OH... YES!
00:10 <****> IT WORKED!!!
00:10 <****> woohoo
00:10 <****> go team
00:10 <****> My Wstinghouse monitor is working without any stupid black lines! :D :D :D
00:11 * westinghousesuck hugs his correct modeline
00:14 <****> oi
00:15 <****> toste, your nick is quite close to totse . coincidence?
00:15 <****> when i am in /home/virtual/foo.org/var/www/html/dons/app/controllers/components and i do : /home/virtual/site2/fst/var/www/cgi-bin/achat achat.txt
00:15 <****> it says : The file out_ doesn't exist
00:16 <****> but when i do it in the dir /home/virtual/site2/fst/var/www/cgi-bin/ it works
00:16 <****> any idea why :/
00:16 <****> toste, no way of knowing without knowing the contents of achat
00:17 <****> achat seems to create something called `pwd`/out_, but references it as ./out_ or sth like that
00:17 <****> yeah... i guess, it's a C prog for direct payment
00:17 <****> i get this error in my apache errorlog when i execute from php
00:18 <****> then try to chmod
00:18 <****> [Mon Nov 12 10:09:44 2007] [error] [client ] sh: ./bin/requester: No such file or directory, referer: http://foo.org/dons/confirmation
00:19 <****> no, chdir :)
00:19 <****> This is great, it works! :) :)
00:24 <****> I am looking for a distribution which can be installed and booted from USB flash drive
00:25 <****> _joey: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_USB lists many
00:27 <****> ls
00:27 <****> well, he didn't say "run" from usb, you could install debian from usb stick
00:27 <****> CodingBitch: cool handle
00:28 <****> or maybe "live" is what he meant by "booted"
00:28 <****> bah
00:28 <****> humbug?
00:29 <****> yeah live whatever terminlogy is used
00:29 <****> so debian live or pen drive linux?
00:31 <****> _joey: the problem with usb sticks is that they have a limited number of write cycles - 100,000 per block or so (although this number is always increasing). This means that swap on flash is a big nono, and if you can create the install on a normal hard drive then copy to the usb you'll use up far fewer write cycles. Getting a premade image is baiscally equivalent to this process.
00:31 <****> knoppix can be booted from usb stick...
00:31 <****> heraclitus: that's what the pen drive project is for. :)
00:32 <****> heraclitus: so can a lot of distros
00:32 <****> swap on a usb stick? ouch
00:33 <****> koala_man: afair there where plans for swap over NFS O_o
00:33 <****> one of the users under red hat linux is unable to perform the ps command, is there a way i can log on to root and assign him this permission?
00:34 <****> johns55:
00:34 <****> Only him, or all users?
00:34 <****> only him
00:35 <****> i have some e2fs images as files on disk, and they grow crazily
00:35 <****> but when i copy them, they get small again
00:35 <****> wru cold weather
00:35 <****> 86 outside
00:35 <****> lame
00:35 <****> e.g. they decrease in size by 90%
00:35 <****> I'd quite like to know the solution to johns55's issue
00:35 <****> what's going on with these images?
00:36 <****> All I could think of is creation of a new group but that is far from most practical
00:36 <****> i cant seem to stick to a distro..
00:36 <****> i need someone to recommend me a good distro
00:36 <****> I'd go for Debian
00:37 <****> It doesn't interfere with what you want to do, and it works perfectly
00:37 <****> i used debian
00:37 <****> Unlike some distros which force you to do stuff to help maintain your system's package management or whatever
00:38 <****> Debian is nice
00:38 <****> Sashi: what makes you *not* want to use Debian?
00:38 <****> nothing.. really..
00:38 <****> Go for it :)
00:38 <****> I'm yet to try Gentoo, but I'm sure it's very high maintainance
00:39 <****> Given the chance, I'd install it and try it out
00:39 <****> anyone know of a site that shows what common apache problems there are and the solutions to them? like common troubleshooting methods?
00:39 <****> i hate gentoo lolz :P
00:39 <****> what is the file out_ ?
00:39 <****> My home system, however, just seems incompatible with most POSIX OSes
00:39 <****> Kupo24z: er, the Apache website?
00:39 <****> it takes too long to get a base
00:40 <****> btw whats the latest debian version? 4R1?
00:40 <****> Gawd knows.
00:40 <****> I know their packages are a little dated though, however
00:40 <****> couldnt find anything there
00:40 <****> They are tested
00:40 <****> Especially when compared to those of Gentoo
00:40 <****> that's why it's so damn stable
00:40 <****> so debian.. latest is?
00:40 <****> GhostlyDeath_: they test every single package?
00:41 <****> 4.0r1 I think
00:41 <****> w3: Not sure about every one
00:41 <****> but that's what they sy
00:41 <****> say*
00:41 <****> hey, in a bash script file, i want it to exit with an error code if any of the commands it run fail
00:41 <****> Kupo24z, I don't know of a site like that, but maybe #apache could help you
00:41 <****> the documentation at httpd.apache.org is pretty good though, imo
00:42 <****> how can i do this?
00:43 <****> FC8 LOOKS promising
00:43 <****> GhostlyDeath_: seems a bit pointless to hold up such highly desired packages such as recent Gnome developments (especially when they themselves improve on stability)
00:43 <****> moqq: no way to do it
00:43 <****> i used FC2-6
00:43 <****> moqq: you need a real language for that :(
