00:01 <****> masteroc: mkfs.yourfs
00:01 <****> but how do i tell it to only do that to my usb drive?
00:02 <****> im using ubuntu and im not sure where it actually is... /media/sda1 or /dev/sda or what
00:02 <****> mkfs.yourfs /dev/yourusb
00:02 <****> masteroc: use mkfs.yourfs /dev/sda1
00:02 <****> lets not hope sda1 is your sata hdd :p
00:02 <****> just unplug and plug your usb key
00:02 <****> and looks at dmesg
00:02 <****> hope not*
00:03 <****> masteroc: /dev/sda1 is a partition - /dev/sda is the hard drive
00:03 <****> mkfs.vfat 2.11 (12 Mar 2005)
00:03 <****> mkfs.vfat: /dev/sda1 contains a mounted file system.
00:03 <****> (or USB flash drive)
00:03 <****> don't do that
00:03 <****> first check which sd it is
00:03 <****> by whatching my dmseg?
00:03 <****> yes
00:04 <****> i'm not understanding how to add users to groups. (ubuntu 7.04)
00:04 <****> it looks like i need to...add a new user that i'm creating from scratch to a group, but i just want to add an existing user to an existing group.
00:04 <****> is there any way to narrow down the dmseg because its giiving me lots of stuff
00:04 <****> yay
00:04 <****> got a job!!!!!!!!!!!!
00:04 <****> epswing, open the users/groups
00:04 <****> and to be frank, i dont really know what im looking for
00:05 <****> congrats un1x01d
00:05 <****> 10x :)
00:05 <****> neverblue: sorry but i don't know what that means.
00:05 <****> epswing: useradd -g existing_group newuser
00:06 <****> that's what i'm saying, i have an existing user
00:06 <****> ok i think i found it
00:06 <****> i want to add the www-data (apache) user to the subversion group. both already exist.
00:06 <****> sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] 499712 512-byte hardware sectors (256 MB)
00:06 <****> [ 42.838416] sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off
00:06 <****> [ 42.838422] sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 23 00 00 00
00:06 <****> [ 42.838424] sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Assuming drive cache: write through
00:06 <****> [ 42.840620] sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] 499712 512-byte hardware sectors (256 MB)
00:06 <****> [ 42.841164] sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off
00:06 <****> [ 42.841169] sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 23 00 00 00
00:06 <****> [ 42.841172] sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Assuming drive cache: write through
00:06 <****> [ 42.841184] sda: sda1
00:06 <****> hax hax
00:06 <****> epswing: man usermod
00:06 <****> so its sda1 right?
00:06 <****> usermod -G additional_group existing_user
00:07 <****> masteroc: use a pastebin next time
00:07 <****> my bad
00:07 <****> which jabber client is best? that is most powerfull etc. jabber-only is fine
00:07 <****> epswing, there is a tool in Ubuntu to handle users/groups
00:07 <****> rmaj: Psi
00:07 <****> neverblue: right, but it doesn't display the www-data user
00:08 <****> gajim is also a nice choice, though
00:08 <****> GNU\colossus: afair psi was not so good. can I attach notes to users, and store history
00:08 <****> don't know about those notes you're talking about
00:08 <****> but history is storable, yes, of course
00:08 <****> Psi implements mosz of XMPP's features
00:09 <****> it's the most advanced client by far imho
00:09 <****> epswing: btw, the user in question needs to log out before changes take effect
00:09 <****> actually, it's enough for him to log in anew ;)
00:09 <****> copper: thanks. would a user like www-data, backup, etc, actually be logged in though?
00:09 <****> (so `su` would be fine, for example)
00:10 <****> kopete will do jabber but I don't use it so can't say if it's eq to PSi
00:10 <****> anyone use the netwatch command often?
00:10 <****> Lab_Rat: it clearly isn't
00:10 <****> kopete is a fine app
00:10 <****> but when it comes to jabber, it just loses hands down versus psi
00:10 <****> epswing: in case of daemons, restart them
00:10 <****> GNU\colossus, That was my feeling as well from the last time I tried it
00:10 <****> copper: gottcha, thanks
00:25 <****> hey alls
00:25 <****> hello, everytime i restart my computer i need to modprobe command to activate my wireless card, is there anyway to add this command to start when x does, or maybe even before it, you guys would know i guess.
00:25 <****> depends on the card i believe
00:25 <****> i think some cards require a kickstart to get em going
00:25 <****> if the system doesnt call the card the card doesnt know to start
00:25 <****> at least thats how i believe it works
00:25 <****> anybody in here use d4x?? i have DLed it but cant find a man for it. i want to be able to paste in a list of links to add to queue, and i want it to use same user/pass everyt ime i enter a link from a certon time w/out having to type it in every time. these r simple things yet i just cant find how to config d4x to do it
00:25 <****> there is a wrapper you can install but i dont know much about it unfortunately
00:26 <****> i know the command to activate it, but i dont know how to add it to startup
00:26 <****> you would have to write a script i believe
00:26 <****> oh dear
00:26 <****> put it in /etc/rc.d/init.d
00:26 <****> ok
00:26 <****> unless there is one out there already
00:27 <****> there is nothing in init.d
00:29 <****> init.d runs at startup?
00:33 <****> yes
00:33 <****> init.d should run at startup
00:34 <****> check
00:34 <****> /etc/inittab
00:35 <****> i think thats where a majority of stuff is.
00:41 <****> hi at all
00:41 <****> how resolve "Not configured to listen on any interfaces!" error when launch dhcp 3 server
00:42 <****> ThRiX I suspect you don't have any dhcp ranges configured
00:42 <****> uhm...
00:42 <****> can i post my conf?
00:42 <****> in pastebin
00:43 <****> authoritative;
00:43 <****> option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.1;
00:43 <****> option netbios-name-servers 192.168.1.1;
00:43 <****> next-server 192.168.1.100;
